Meet Pete Cookston, husband of Melissa Cookston
Chef, cookbook author and restaurateur Melissa Cookston has been married to her husband Pete Cookston for two decades. The couple exchanged wedding vows in September 1997. On their 14th wedding anniversary, Pete posted on his Facebook: “I want to thank my beautiful wife Melissa Nichols Cookston for kept me by my side for 14 years today. Your canonization appointment is due any day now.”
On her YouTube channel, Melissa posted a video in 2017. She said in the video “my husband made the mistake of taking me to a barbecue competition while we were dating and it was so fun for me. to me…I saw these guys cooking this whole pig and it really captured that competitive spirit that I think we all have and who doesn’t love barbecue.”
It was in 1996 that she started cooking whole pigs, ribs, brisket, chicken and pretty much anything else you could stuff into a smoker and won more blue ribbons than the Pabst factory in this process.
In fact, Pete helped Melissa in her first competition. She called it a “disaster.” Melissa added, “My brother and husband are downloading my stuff for me and losing all the specs. It’s freezing rain. I had to huddle in the space heater all night just to keep warm and did I mention I’m seven months pregnant.”

Melissa was born in a small town called Ruleville but later moved to Greenville. She was introduced to the restaurant business at the age of 13. She currently owns three restaurants and and author of two cookbooks: Smoking hot in the South (2016) et Smoking in the men’s room (2014).
After dominating her competitors on the barbecue circuit, including two grand champions and five whole hog champions at the Memphis World Championship Barbecue Cooking Competition in May, Melissa for the first time step into the culinary field. Her famous pitmastering abilities have also landed her on national television, where she has starred in shows like “The Chew” and “Chopped” and served as a judge on Season 4 of Destination’s “BBQ Pitmasters.” America. They owned and operated their own catering company called Melissa’s Steak and two Memphis BBQ Company barbecue restaurants, one in Horn Lake and one in Dunwoody, Georgia, in the past 10 years.
