Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed (born 16 June 1960) is the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

She was called to the Ministry of Finance after Kemi Adeosun resigned in 2018. She is a Nigerian politician and accountant.

Before being appointed to President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet, Zainab Ahmed worked as a senior accountant at the Kaduna State Ministry of Finance.

She is also a native of Kaduna state and holds a Bachelor and MBA in Accounting; obtained after extensive study at two higher education institutions.

Early life

Nigeria’s Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed was born on the 16th of June, 1960. She was groomed early in the Northern region of Nigeria.

Spending most of her early days in her hometown in Kaduna State in particular, she secretly learned her local dialect before moving to the western part of the country for educational purposes.

The 60-year-old also grew up in a religious family; with her father being very enthusiastic about doing things that are consistent with Islamic culture. She is also considered a smart girl due to her academic achievements; better than her siblings, as well as friends.

Due to limited educational opportunities for girls in the Northern region at that time, Zainab Ahmed was also considered one of the few well-educated children in her neighborhood.

Her educational qualifications include an MBA, Bachelor of Accountancy (1981) from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria; IJMB ‘A’ Levels (1979) from SBS/ABU Zaria; and WASC ‘O’ Level in 1977 from Queen Amina College, Kaduna.

Career

Zainab Ahmed is currently the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Her illustrious career began in 1982 when she was appointed Accountant II in charge of Main Accounts of the Ministry of Finance in Kaduna State; after completing the National Youth Service in Kaduna State in 1981/1982 where she was appointed as a Chartered Accountant by Messrs. Egunjobi Suleiman & Co., as Audit Trainee.

In March 1984, Ahmed was promoted to Accountant I at the Ministry of Finance before resigning in 1985 to join NITEL.

She is also the former executive secretary and national coordinator of the Nigeria Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (NEITI), and a member of the last two NEITI boards, having served on at NEITI and EITI Global. Some of her duties as a public servant of the Nation include; managed Kaduna State Nigeria’s investment company and worked as the Chief Financial Officer of a Nigerian mobile telecommunications company.

In 2018, Zainab Ahmed was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning following the resignation of Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun.

She was reappointed by the President and sworn in on August 21, 2019.

Zainab Ahmed’s achievements in the field of Finance do not prevent her from spending time with her family. However, this respected Minister has a very busy life, with a lot of time devoted to his homeland.
