Sheryl Crow Criticizes Drake After Using AI-Generated Tupac Shakur on Kendrick Lamar Diss Track

Sheryl Crow called out Drake after he infamously used Artificial Intelligence to create Tupac Shakur’s voice without the estate’s permission.

In an interview with BBC, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer spoke out strongly against the use of Artificial Intelligence in music. Crow specifically called out Drake’s move to use Tupac’s voice on “Taylor Made Freestyle,” his diss track about Kendrick Lamar.

“You can’t bring people back from the dead and trust that they’ll support it. I’m sure Drake thought, ‘Yeah, I shouldn’t have done that, but I’ll say sorry later.’ But it’s already been done and people will find it even if he takes it down. It goes against the life force that exists in all of us,” Crow pointed out.

Shortly after Shakur’s estate issued a strong legal response to the song, Drake removed it from streaming platforms, but a version of the song still exists on the internet.

Crow’s distrust of Artificial Intelligence in music stems from an incident when a producer replaced her singing voice with that of John Mayer.

“I know John and I know the nuance in his voice,” Crow told the outlet. “And there would be no way you could know that he wasn’t singing that song.”

Crow has been at the forefront of advocating for ever-tighter regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in music.

“AI will impact everyone’s lives – musicians, truck drivers, teachers, everyone. I hope that AI will help us solve many of the world’s problems and reduce suffering , but we need ethical boundaries to ensure that. Congress needs to act now, and we need to be diligent,” Crow wrote in a column in The Hollywood Reporter.

Crow is one of 200 artists in the music industry who signed an open letter to tech companies calling on them to “Stop Devaluing Music.”

In a petition published against AI music creation technology, megawatt A-listers in the music industry such as Crow, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Billie Eilish and Miranda Lambert signed a letter calls on creators to practice responsible use of technology.

“We, the undersigned members of the artist and creative community, call on AI developers, technology companies, digital music platforms and services to cease their use,” the letter reads. artificial intelligence to violate and devalue the rights of human artists.” “Make no mistake: we believe that, when used responsibly, AI has enormous potential to advance human creativity and in ways that enable the development and growth of new experiences and exciting for music fans everywhere.”
