‘American Idol’ Season 1 Was ‘Very Cruel,’ Former Co-Host Brian Dunkman Recalls

Brian Dunkman is an important part of American Idol Inaugural season as Ryan Seacrest’s co-host. However, he still had to leave the entertainment industry to focus on his family. The former host recently shared some shocking things he witnessed while participating in the reality TV singing competition series.

The former host recently appeared in an episode of Still Here Hollywood podcast with Steve Kmetko, in which he reminisces about his time on the show and recalls some of the most unforgettable moments during the audition process.

“You’re spending a lot of time with these kids in line, and you’re getting to know them, you’re getting to know their parents. It’s a solid hour of one kid after another.” arrive, [and] every one of them was screaming. And I thought, ‘What’s going on?'” he said.

Then, he found himself crying behind the curtain because he was affected by the contestants who never made it to the next round. He likens his experiences to them because he has also auditioned many times and knows that it is not easy.

Dunkman also remembers a young girl whose carpenter father sold his tools to pay for a trip to the location where she would audition.

The girl was “excited” to face the judges, but when she walked out of the room, her eyes were dead and her body was broken.

“I just don’t understand why that was necessary… But that first season was very, very cruel,” he said.

Regardless, he still thinks that’s exactly why the show became a huge hit: how strict and mean Simon Cowell is, to the point where he got death threats in England.

Dunkman later explained that he didn’t want to “speak ill of anyone” on the show, but he believed American Idol Setup is not good.

He added: “I don’t believe you should subject children to such humiliation.”

Reflecting further on his time on the show, he remembered that Cowell was a “really nice guy” and had a good sense of humour. He also adores Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson, whom he describes as “really sweet guys”.

Dunkman later set the record straight about leaving the show. He said many people thought he was fired, but the truth is that he left the spotlight to raise his son.
